El índice de masa corporal (IMC) es una forma de medir el tamaño corporal. Es una herramienta para estimar la grasa corporal y detectar la obesidad y los riesgos para la salud. ¿Por qué es importante calcular el IMC?

Calcular el IMC es una buena manera de controlar el riesgo de enfermedades relacionadas con la grasa corporal. El sobrepeso y la obesidad están asociados a un mayor riesgo de mortalidad y otras enfermedades o afecciones. Por lo general, cuanto mayor sea su IMC, mayor será el riesgo de desarrollar otras enfermedades relacionadas con la obesidad crónica, incluyendo:

  • Diabetes tipo II
  • Enfermedad cardiovascular
  • Accidente cerebrovascular
  • Tensión arterial alta
  • Infertilidad
  • Depresión y ansiedad
  • Enfermedad coronaria
  • Dislipidemia
  • Enfermedad del hígado graso no alcohólico (EHGNA)/Esteatohepatitis no alcohólica (EHNA)
  • Enfermedad de reflujo gastroesofágico (ERGE)
  • Síndrome metabólico (SMet)
  • Incontinencia urinaria
  • Apnea obstructiva del sueño y problemas respiratorios
  • Enfermedad renal crónica
  • Varios tipos de cáncer: incluidos, entre otros: cáncer de mama, colon, endometrio, esófago, riñón, ovario y páncreas
  • Osteoartritis de rodilla
  • Enfermedad de cálculos biliares
  • Trombosis
  • Gota

¿Cuáles son los límites del IMC?

Calcular el IMC es una acción simple y objetiva, pero puede ser engañosa en ciertos casos y para algunos grupos de personas. Las investigaciones han demostrado que el IMC es menos preciso a la hora de predecir el riesgo de enfermedad en personas mayores, atletas, personas altas o bajas y personas con tipos de cuerpos más musculosos. Por ejemplo, los atletas o culturistas de élite tienen más músculo y pesan más, lo que aumenta su IMC.

Calcular el IMC tampoco tiene en cuenta:

  • Factores de riesgo hereditarios asociados a enfermedades relacionadas con la obesidad, como el síndrome metabólico
  • Factores de entorno y de estilo de vida además de la obesidad que pueden contribuir a su riesgo de desarrollar enfermedades crónicas
  • Cómo se distribuye la grasa corporal en las personas 

. Tu IMC no te define, pero conocer y entender su IMC puede ser una herramienta poderosa para asumir el control de tu propia salud.

Independientemente del IMC, los profesionales sanitarios recomiendan llevar una dieta y un estilo de vida saludables. Habla con tu médico sobre tu peso y salud y evalúa qué medidas pueden ser necesarias.
